Roundmaille

Dieses Armband habe ich ganz vergessen und nun wurde es dringend Zeit, diese Schönheit mal zu posten. Das Armband habe ich während einer Schlechtwetterphase meines Besuches in Venedig gemacht. Der Weave nennt sich Roundmaille oder auch Star Weave, Hexagon oder Snake Chain (wegen der Form und Flexibilität). Man macht zuerst ein Band mit European 4-in-1, das etwas länger ist als das fertige Armand und schließt mit dem letzten Ring die Kette zur runden Form. Das European 4-in-1-Band muß deswegen etwas länger sein als das fertige Stück, da sich die Kette durch den letzten Schritt etwas verkürzt. Die fertige Kette wirkt sehr massiv, ist aber sehr flexibel. Damit das Armband nicht so schwer wird, habe ich Aluringe (18gauge, ID 4mm, AR 3,9 von Beadsisters)  genommen und einen 925er-Silber-Verschluß dazu.

I almost forgot about this bracelet and it was time to post this beauty. I made this bracelet during some rainy days of my visit in Venice last fall. The weave is called Roundmaille or also Star Weave, Hexagon or Snake Chain (due to its shape and flexibility). First you make a European 4-in-1 sheet, a bit longer than the finished piece, and zip up the chain with the last ring and giving it its round shape. The starting 4-in-1 sheet has to be a bit longer than the finished piece, because the chain is shortened by zipping it up in the last step. The finished chain looks very massive, but is very flexible. Due to weight issues I chose to take aluminium rings (18gauge, ID 4mm, AR 3,9 by Beadsisters) and a sterling silver clasp.

Chainmaille: Romanov-Armband/Bracelet

OK, noch mehr Chainmaille, diesmal mit einer Byzantine-Variation genannt Romanov. Dafür macht man einzelne Byzantine-Elemente und verbindet sie mit größeren Ringen zu einer Kette. In die Mitte der einzelnen Elemente kann man noch Perlen einsetzen. Mein Romanov-Armband ist aus 1mm/18 gauge-Kupfedraht gemacht und der AR für die Byzantine-Elemente ist 3,5. Der Verschluß ist ebenfalls von mir mit dem gleichen Draht hergestellt. Die Perlen sind kobaltblaue tschechische Glasschliffperlen und ca. 6 mm groß.

OK, more chainmaille, this time with a variation of Byzantine called Romanov. For this variation you make single byzantine elements and assemble them with bigger jump rings to get a chain. In addition one can add beads in the middle of the single elements. My Romanov bracelet is made from 18-gauge copper wire and the AR for the Byzantine elements is 3,5. The clasp is handmade by me from the same copper wire than the bracelet. The beads are 6 mm cobalt blue Czech cut beads.

Chainmaille: Byzantine-Armband/Bracelet

Während ich über ein paar Designs für den Oktober-Armband-Swap nachgedacht habe, sind mir wieder mal meine Ringe für Chainmaille in die Hände gefallen und ich habe mal kurz, so quasi im Vorbeigehen, dieses Armband gekettelt.  Das Problem ist, daß ich dieses Mal meine ,,Zielperson” im Swap nicht wirklich gut kenne und deswegen auch nicht weiß, was ihr gefällt. Aber dieses Armband erschien mir definitiv zu wuchtig. Und deshalb seht ihr es nun schon hier. Gemacht mit 1mm/18-gauge Kupferdraht mit einem Innendurchmesser von 3,5 mm, folglich auch einer AR von 3,5.  Die Perlen sind tschechische Glasschliffperlen von Hudson’s Bay und die Schließe habe ich selbst aus 1mm-Kupferdraht gefertigt. Ich denke, ich werde das Armband in meinem Artfire-Shop stellen.

While thinking about some designs for the October Bracelet Swap, I ran across my jump rings for chainmaille and so I made this bracelet. The problem with the current bracelet swap is that I don’t really “know” my mark this time and I don’t know what she likes. But this bracelet definitely seemed too bulky to me and so you can see it here already. Made from 18-gauge copper wire with an ID of 3,5 mm, which makes an AR of 3,5. The beads are Czech cut beads from Hudson’s Bay and the clasp is handmade by me from 18-gauge copper wire. I think I’ll put this in my Artfire shop.

Secret Santa’s Ear (oder einfach nur ein Ohrring Swap)

Die Beadingdaily-Crew hat wieder einmal zugeschlagen und Inca organisiert für uns alle nun einen monatlichen Ohrring-Swap. Jeder Teilnehmer bekommt per Mail einen Namen, darf aber nicht verraten welchen und muß dann für sein ,,Opfer” ein Paar Ohrringe entwerfen. Ein paar Anhaltspunkte konnte man auf der jeweiligen Profilseite seines Swap-Partners nachlesen, aber der Rest war einzig und allein dem Können, der Kreativität und den Vorlieben des Designers überlassen. 

The Beadingdaily crew stroke again and Inca organizes now a monthly earring swap. Every participant gets a name and then has to make a pair of earrings for his “target”. Along with the name you get some specification on the BD profile site of your person, but the rest is up to the skills, the creativity and the preferences of the designer.

Mein erstes Paar Ohrringe durfte ich für Sheila machen. Ich habe aus Kupferringen Byzantine-Elemente gemacht und mit blauen Cateyes verziert. Die Ohrhaken habe ich aus demselben Kupferdraht geformt, schön gehämmert und glattgefeilt, damit keine scharfen Kanten zurückbleiben.

I designed my first pair of earrings for Sheila. I made a copper byzantine element and added some blue cateye beads. I also made the earwires from the same copper wire as the jump rings, hammered and filed them to avoid any sharp edges. 

Ich habe meine ersten Ohrringe von Donna bekommen und sie sind den ganzen langen Weg von der NW-Pazifikküste der USA hierher gereist. Ich liebe die Ohrringe! Genau meine Farben! Ein Mix blauer und grüner (Caribean Opal, Crystal AB, Erenite und Aquamarine) Swarovski-Kristalle und Sterlingsilber. Und schon alleine das Auspacken war wie Weihnachten. Vielen Dank, Donna!

 My first pair of earrings came from Donna and came all the way from the US Northwest coast. I love these earrings! Exactly my colors! A mix of blue and green (caribean opal, crystal AB, erenite and aquamarine) Swarovski crystals and sterling silver. And even opening the package was like Christmas. Thank you so much, Donna!

Double Chain mit SW-Perlen/Double Chain with Freshwater Pearls

Eigentlich sollte das hier ja eine Byzantine Chain werden….bis ich gemerkt habe, daß man den Innendurchmesser bei Kupferdraht etwas größer wählen sollte als bei anderen Drahtsorten (ca. 1/4 mm). Kupferdraht ist meistens mit Klarlack gegen Anlaufen geschützt und das vergrößert den Durchmesser des Drahtes minimal. Also keine Byzantine, dafür ein sehr schönes, aber einfaches Muster, nämlich die Double Chain (,,technische” Daten für diese Kette: 0,8mm Draht (20 gauge), 2,5 mm ID, AR: 3,1). Aus der Double Chain gehen viele andere Chainmaille-Muster hervor, aber sie sieht auch alleine recht ansprechend aus. Ich habe sie hier mit hellgelben SW-Perlen aufgelockert und finde den Kontrast zwischen dem eher ,,rauen” Chainmaille und den zarten Perlen sehr schön. Den Abschluß bildet wie immer eine handgemachte Schließe aus 1mm-Kupferdraht.

Actually this should become a byzantine chain….until I realized, that the ID of copper wire jump rings should be slightly bigger than for rings of other wires (approx. 1/4 mm). Copper wire is protected againgst oxidizing with a clear lacquer coating, which increases the wire diameter a tiny little bit. So no byzantine, but an other very beautiful but simple pattern, the double chain (“technical” data for this chain: 0,8mm wire (20 gauge), 2,5 mm ID, AR: 3,1). Many chain maille patterns emerge from the double chain, but this pattern also looks good on its own. I mixed up the chain with light yellow rice pearls and very much like the contrast between the “raw” chain maille and the delicate pearls. I finished the design with a handmade hook-and-eye-clasp made from 18 gauge copper wire.

Byzantine-Rosenkranz-Armband/Byzantine Rosary Style Bracelet

Jules, ein bißchen Inspiration für dich! Vor kurzem habe ich mir das Buch ,,Handcrafting Chain and Bead Jewelry” von Scott David Plumlee gekauft und es war wirklich jeden Cent wert. Da es sehr wenig deutsche Literatur über Chainmaille gibt, habe ich mir das meiste selbst beigebracht, aber irgendwie kam ich nicht mehr weiter und es hat auch nicht mehr wirklich Spaß gemacht. Dieses Buch hat meine Kettenkünste nun auf eine neue Stufe gehoben und einige Dinge sind nicht mehr ganz so mühsam. Als erstes habe ich das ,,Rosary Design” aus dem Buch ausprobiert, das eine Variation der Byzantine Chain ist (oder eine Byzantine Chain mit ,,perligen” Unterbrechungen). Meine Variante besteht aus 0,8 mm-Messingdraht und hellgrünen 4 mm Katzenaugen-Perlen. Die Schließe ist ebenfalls handgemacht nach einer Anleitung aus Scotts Buch, aber aus 1mm-Messingdraht, um ihr mehr Stabilität zu verleihen.

Jules, some inspiration for you! Recently I bought the book “Handcrafting Chain and Bead Jewelry” by Scott David Plumlee and it was worth every cent. As there is very little German literature about chain maille, I am mostly self-taught, but somehow I just can’t get any further and I didn’t have much fun. But this book took my chain making skills to a new level and some things are not that exhausting anymore. Firts I tried the “Rosary Design” from the book, which is a variation of the byzantine chain (or a byzantine chain with “beady” interruptions). My variation is made from 20 gauge brass wire and light green 4mm cateye beads. The clasp is also handmade following instructions in Scott’s book, but from 18 gauge wire to give it additional strength.

Half Persian

So, das nächste Abenteuer in der Chain-Maille-Technik ist überstanden! Wenn ihr gute Nerven habt (und ich meine wirklich, wirklich gute Nerven!), dann versucht mal Half Persian. Die Technik an sich ist nicht schwer, aber der Anfang……ich war kurz davor, das Handtuch zu werfen und mir was anderes vorzunehmen. Wenn man vier Hände hat (was eher selten ist ), dann ist der Anfang auch gut zu bewältigen. Ich habe irgendwo gelesen, daß es Leute gibt, die immer ein Stück der fertigen Kette behalten, um nie wieder den Anfang machen zu müssen. Vielleicht sollte ich das auch machen. Naja, mit genug Zeit, einer Styroporplatte, etlichen Stecknadeln, zwei Zangen und viel Geduld habe ich es dann doch geschafft. Und hier ist nun das fertige Schmuckstück: ein Armband aus versilberten Ringen (1,0 mm Draht, 4 mm ID, AR: 4) mit einer handgemachten S-Schließe, in die ich eine Türkisperle eingearbeitet habe. Oh boy, my next chain maille adventure is over! If you have strong nerves (and I mean really, really strong nerves!), you should try half persian. Weaving the chain is not really difficult, but the beginning…..I was short before throwing in the towel and try something else. If you have four hands (what is very seldom ), then you can do the beginning really easy. I read somewhere, that there are people, who always keep a piece of the chain to avoid doing the beginning of half persian again. Maybe I should do this, too. Well, with enough time, a styrofoam board, some pins, two pairs of pliers and much patience, I managed the beginning of the chain. And here is the finished piece: a bracelet made of silverplated jump rings (18-gauge wire, 4 mm ID, AR: 4) with a handmade s-clasp featuring a turquoise bead. Box Chain….Inca Puno….Queen’s Braid….

Dieses Chain-Maille-Muster ist, wie fast alle anderen auch, unter verschiedenen Namen bekannt. Da das Muster ähnlich wie Byzantine aufgebaut ist, habe ich es für mein zweites Chain-Maille-Schmuckstück ausgewählt. Das Armband ist wieder aus Kupferringen gemacht (0,8 mm, 3,5 mm ID, AR 4,4) und mit einer schönen gebänderten Karneoperle verziert. Den Abschluß bildet eine handgemachte Schließe, ebenfalls aus Kupferdraht. Eine tolle Anleitung für die Box Chain (nebst anderen) findet sich bei Davidchain Jewelry (Danke, Scott, für die tolle Seite! Und Ski Heil!). This chain maille weave is, like many others, known by several names. And because the pattern is built very similar to byzantine, I chose it for my second chain maille project. The bracelet is again made from copper rings (gauge 20, 3,5 mm ID, AR 4,4) and features a beautiful banded carnelain bead. I finished it with a handmade hook-and-eye-clasp, also made from copper wire. A great tutorial for box chain is offered on Davidchain Jewelry (Thanks, Scott, for the helpful site! Komplett!/Complete!

Ich kriege einfach kein gutes Foto von diesen Möbius-Rose-Ohrringen hin! Harrrrrrr! Egal, auf jeden Fall habe ich damit mein Kupfer-Schmuck-Set (Ring, Kette, Armband und Ohrringe) fertig und ich freue mich sehr darüber. Ich denke, das werde ich selber behalten. Die Ringe, die ich für die Ohrringe verwendet habe, sind dieselben wie für das Byzantine Chain Armband.

I just can’t take a good pic of these moebius rose earrings! Arrrrghhhhh! But my copper jewelry set (ring, necklace, bracelet and earrings) is now finished and I really like it. I think I’ll keep that for myself. The jump rings, I used for the earrings, are the same as the ones of the byzantine chain bracelet.

Byzantine Chain Armband/Bracelet

Dieses Armband war ein erster Versuch von Chain Maille meinerseits. Und von dem Ergebnis bin ich recht begeistert. Nach einem Fehlstart mit zu dünnem Draht und längerer ,,Werkeldauer” habe ich es gestern endlich fertig bekommen. Verwendet habe ich 1 mm-Kupferdraht und eine 3,5 mm-Stricknadel (AR 3,5), um die ich den Draht für die Ringe gewickelt habe. Die Schließe ist ebenfalls aus 1 mm-Draht gemacht. Auf Bevs Blog (Danke für die Hilfe, Bev!) gibt es jede Menge Varianten der Byzantine Chain zu sehen und ich denke, ich werde noch einiges ausprobieren. Das Armband paßt übrigens hervorragend zu meinem Seaglass-Anhänger. Fehlen nur noch ein paar Ohrringe….vielleicht ein paar Möbius-Rosen?

This bracelet is my first attempt in making chain maille. And I’m really delighted by the outcome. After a false start with the wrong wire gauge and a slightly longer working time than planned I finished it yesterday. I worked with 18-gauge copper wire and a 3,5 mm knitting needle as mandrel for the rings (AR 3.5). For the closure I also used 18-gauge copper wire. On Bev’s Blog (Thanks for the help, Bev!) you can see many variations of byzantine chain and I think, that I’ll try some of these, too. BTW, the bracelet goes perfect with one of my wirewrapped sea glass pendants. I just have to make matching earrings….maybe some moebius roses?
