Roundmaille
Von Kokopelli am 15. Januar 2010.
I almost forgot about this bracelet and it was time to post this beauty. I made this bracelet during some rainy days of my visit in Venice last fall. The weave is called Roundmaille or also Star Weave, Hexagon or Snake Chain (due to its shape and flexibility). First you make a European 4-in-1 sheet, a bit longer than the finished piece, and zip up the chain with the last ring and giving it its round shape. The starting 4-in-1 sheet has to be a bit longer than the finished piece, because the chain is shortened by zipping it up in the last step. The finished chain looks very massive, but is very flexible. Due to weight issues I chose to take aluminium rings (18gauge, ID 4mm, AR 3,9 by Beadsisters) and a sterling silver clasp.

Beautiful job! I must say I like the 18G and the bright aluminum. I’m not into dainty chain maille or heavy jewelry.
THIS IS OUTSTANDING! I just want to grab it and touch it. I love the feel of chain maille in my hands. It’s like a very cool slinky.
Smart choice using the alumnium rings. I know what you mean about the weight. I made one using sterling silver and it was a bit heavy, but it was perfect for the young male I made it for. He loved the weight of it. So I guess you really need to consider the person wearing it.
Thanks! Chainmaille jewelry is always a choice between the origin of chainmaille used as armor and today’s use as jewelry. But I also don’t like chainmaille jewelry to be too dainty. And aluminium is a good choice for chunky weaves. But i have some sterling silverrings in my stash ready to be used for chainmaille.
