The Lemonade Award!

Vielen Dank An Pearl von The Beading Gem’s Journal für diesen Award! Mein erster!

Zuerst war ich ja nicht begeistert von dieser Award-Idee. Das hat für mich sowas von Kettenbrief und Schneeball-System und diese Begriffe sind für mich eher negativ belegt. Nun ja, jetzt habe ich von Pearl den ersten Blog-Award bekommen, den ,,Lemonade Award for attitude and gratitude” und zwar für meine ,,Can-Do-Einstellung” und meinen zweisprachigen Blog. Ich wußte gar nicht, daß ich dadurch nebenbei Sprachunterricht gebe. Ich fühle mich schon ein bißchen geehrt, daß ich einen Award bekommen habe und ich hoffe, daß sich dadurch meine Leserschaft noch ein bißchen vergrößert. Und ich würde mich freuen, wenn diese Blog Awards vor allem dazu beitragen, daß sich kreative Blogs und Leute rund um die Welt besser vernetzen können. Es gibt noch so viel zu entdecken! Meine Nominierungen seht ihr am Ende des Posts (der Einfachheit halber nur in Englisch).

First I wasn’t very amused about this award thing. Things like chain letters and pyramid systems came to my mind and they have very negative connotations for me. And now I received my first blog award from Pearl, the Lemonade Award, which is given for attitude and gratitude. I got this award for my can-do attitude and my bilingual blog. But I didn’t know that I teach language courses with my blog. I am honored that I got an award and I hope that my readership will grow a bit more. And I’d be glad if these blog awards would help to connect creative blogs and people around the world. There is still so much to discover!

Tri Leg Chain….aber ich hab’s geschafft!/….but I did it!

Tri Leg Chain war eine harte Nuß, auch wenn die Beschreibung am Anfang nicht so aussah. Und dann kamen die Probleme: der ,,fummelige” Anfang, die richtige Fadenspannung, die Ausrichtung der Perlen, Faden durchgestochen oder verknotet……aber im Endeffekt habe ich diesen Stich auch hinbekommen und hier ist nun das Ergebnis. Eine Halskette mit 11/0-Rocailles in weiß und drei Blautönen, 43 cm lang und mit einem Button-and-Loop-Verschluß ausgestattet. Die Tri Leg Chain wird meistens in sich verdreht getragen, damit ihre Struktur besser zur Geltung kommt. Der Effekt wird hier noch durch die unterschiedlichen Farben der Kanten betont. Wieder eine Technik aus ,,Zulu Inspired Beadwork” gemeistert. Was kommt als nächstes? Und was liegt gerade auf eurem Perlentisch?

Tri Leg Chain was a tricky one, although the instructions didn’t look like being difficult at first. But then the problems emerged: the “fiddly” beginning, the right thread tension, the alignment of the beads, the thread being pierced or knotted……but in the end I managed this stitch, too, and here is the outcome. A necklace with 11/0 seedbeads in white and three shades of blue, 17″ long and featuring a button-and-loop-clasp. Tri Leg Chain is normally worn twisted, which shows better its structure. In this piece the effect is emphasized even more by the different colors of the edges. Mastered another technique from “Zulu Inspired Beadwork”. What’s next? Mein Türkenbund-Armband aus meinem Artfire-Shop hat es auf Tamras Blog “With Our Hands” geschafft. Sie hat dort einen Post über Künstler geschrieben, die auf Artfire verkaufen und außerhalb der USA leben. Dort gibt es ebenfalls Arbeiten aus Kanada, Israel, England, Frankreich, Australien und den Niederlanden zu sehen. Leprechauns Gold/Leprechaun’s Gold

Neben der ganzen Fädelei mit Rocailles blieb mir doch tatsächlich noch ein bißchen Zeit für etwas Gedrahtetes. Es ist eine Kette, ähnlich wie ,,Kleeblätter und Blümchen”, aber diesmal mit vierblättrigen Kleeblättern und grünen Lampwork-Linsen. Und bei der Farb- und Motivwahl kam mir die Legende vom Gold der Leprechauns, der irischen Nationalkobolde, in den Sinn (Ich liebe Legenden!). Der Sage nach horten die Leprechauns seit Jahrhunderten ihr Gold und achten sehr darauf, daß auch nicht ein Stück verlorengeht (aber keine Sorge, ich hüte die Kette nicht wie ein Leprechaun, sondern sie steht hier zum Verkauf). Das Foto wird den Perlen nicht wirklich gerecht, da das Tageslicht leider zur Zeit sehr zu wünschen übrig läßt und die Farben deshalb nicht so toll herauskommen. In Wirklichkeit ist die Farbe ein durchscheinendes Moosgrün und die Perlen sind marmoriert, so daß jede anders aussieht: echte Handarbeit eben! Die Lampwork-Linsen habe ich zuerst mit ,,Wrapped Links” versehen und sie dann mit Metallelementen in Kleeblattform zu einer Kette zusammengefügt. Die Kleeblätter werden schön gleichmäßig, wenn man sie auf einer WigJig herstellt. Das verleiht dem Schmuckstück einen gewissen professionellen Touch. Man kann sie aber auch ganz einfach mit einer Rundzange herstellen und braucht dann eben ein bißchen mehr Übung, damit sie schön gleichmäßig werden. Alle Metallelemente inklusive der Schließe sind von mir aus 1mm-Messingdraht handgefertigt. Damit bin ich jetzt schon bereit für den St.-Patricks-Day!

Besides all the looming with seedbeads I really found some spare time to do some wirework. I made a necklace, similar to “Shamrocks and Florets”, but with four-leaf clovers and green lampwork lentils. And looking at the colors and motifs the legend of the Leprechaun gold came to my mind (I’m a big fan of legends!). The legend says that the Leprechauns, a kind of Irish elves, hord their gold for hundreds of years and take care, that not a single piece gets lost (but don’t worry, I don’t hord this necklace; it’s here for sale). The picture doesn’t do justice to the lampwork beads, but daylight is not the best in winter time and the colors always appear a little dull. In reality the color is a kind of translucent moss green and the beads are marbled, so each one looks different: you see, they’re handcrafted! I made some wrapped links for the lentils and together with some wired four-leaf clovers they became a necklace. The clovers gain uniformity when done on a WigJig. That adds a professional touch to a design. But you can also bend them with your round nose pliers and only need a little more practise to get them all uniform. All metals elements, including the hook-and-eye-closure, are handmade by me from gauge 18 brass wire. So I’m ready for St. Patrick’s Day!

Ohrring-Tag/Earring Day

Zeit für ein paar hübsche Ohrring-Designs! Lange Ohrringe waren früher überhaupt nicht mein Fall, aber inzwischen trage ich sie ganz gern und nicht nur bei besonderen Anlässen. Vier Designs stehen heute zur Auswahl. Das erste Paar entstand aus einem Versuch, eine Spirale aus Draht zu machen. Es hat ganz gut geklappt und ich habe die Spiralen zusammen mit zwei Quarzperlen zu Ohrringen verarbeitet. Das zweite Paar ist ein Design aus Denise Peck’s Buch ,,Wire Style”. Ich habe statt der angegebenen Labradoritperlen Glastropfen genommen, der Draht ist versilberter Kupfedraht. Das Ergebnis gefile mir so gut, daß ich es gleich selber behalten habe (egoistisch, gell? ). Das dritte und das vierte Paar habe ich für zwei Geburtstagskinder gemacht. Ein Paar sollte möglichst lang und aus türkisfarbenen Perlen gemacht sein, das andere sollte glitzern und mit rosa-/pinkfarbenen Perlen gestaltet sein. Ich hoffe, den Mädels gefallen ihre Ohrringe. Diese Ohrringe sind auch die ersten, die mit einer extra Ohrring-Karte geliefert werden, in die man die Ohrringe einhängen kann, um sie besser zu präsentieren und aufzubewahren (s. Bild). Die Idee stammt aus Pearls Blog. Danke für eine weitere tolle Idee, Pearl! Die farbigen Schachteln in den beiden letzten Bildern sind Origami-Geschenkboxen (natürlich ,,made by Kokopelli”, hier gibt’s die Anleitung). So kann das Geschenk gleich verschenkt werden und muß nicht mehr selber verpackt werden.

Time for some beautiful earring designs! A few years ago I didn’t like long dangle earrings, but in the meantime I love wearing them und not only for special occasions. Today I have fourpairs of earrings for you. The first pair emerged from a first try on making a wire spiral. It worked really well and I added two quartz beads and earwires and made some simple earrings from the spirals. The second pair is a design from Denise Peck’s book “Wire Style”. I used glassdrops and silverplated wire instead of labradorite and sterling silver, but the design is the same. I love them (and kept them for myself. Selfish little thing I am )! The third and the fourth pair are for two birtday girls. The first pair should be long and made with turquoise colored beads, the second pair should be glittering and made with rosy/pink colored beads. I hope the girls love their earrings. These earrings are also the first, which are delivered with my new earring card, from which you can hang the earrings to present them much better (s. picture). The idea is from Pearl’s blog. Thanks for another great idea, Pearl! The colored boxes in the two pictures on the right are origami gift boxes (of course “made by Kokopelli”, see a tutorial here, it’s in German, but with step-by-step pictures). So the gift is ready to give away and doesn’t have to be wrapped by the customer itself.

African Helix/Ladder Chain

Schon wieder und nochmal Afrika! Diesmal eine Kette, hergestellt mit einer Technik, die als African Helix oder auch als Ladder Chain bekannt ist. Das erste Mal habe ich die Technik in ,,Zulu Inspired Beadwork” gesehen, aber den eigentlichen Ausschlag, sie auszuprobieren, gab ein Post auf Beading Daily. Es ging um Vorsätze für das neue Jahr und Techniken, die man lernen könnte (z.B. African Helix). Tja, und da ist das Probestück nun: 11/0-Rocailles, schwarzer Nylonfaden und ein Bead-and-Loop-Verschluß, damit das ganze wirklich ,,traditionell” aussieht. Ich mag diesen Look lieber als eine moderne Interpretation mit transparenten oder silverlined Rocailles und einem Federring/Karabiner als Verschluß. Wenn man erstmal gelernt hat, einen solchen Verschluß herzustellen, ist es ganz einfach. Und dafür läßt sich praktisch jede runde Perle verwenden. Der Name ,,Bube, Dame, König, As” fiel mir aufgrund der Farben ein, die so in jedem Kartenspiel vorkommen. Diese Kette steht zum Verkauf in meinem Artfire-Shop.

Africa again! This time a necklace, made with a technique known as African Helix oder also Ladder Chain. The first time I saw this technique in “Zulu Inspired Beadwork”, but the inspiration for finally mastering this stitch was given by a post on Beading Daily. It was about resolutions for the new year and techniques that you might learn (e.g. African Helix). So here’s the first try: size 11 seedbeads, black nylon thread and a bead-and-loop-closure, so the whole thing looks really “traditional”. I like that look a lot more than a modern interpretation with transparent or silverlined seedbeads and a lobster claw clasp. When you finally learnt to make such a closure, it is really easy. And you can take nearly every round bead for it. The name “Jack, Queen, King, Ace” came to my mind because of the colors: they are the same in a card game. This necklace is for sale in my Artfire shop.

Dreiecke und Bögen/Netted Triangles and Swags

Ich war wieder mal in Afrika, zumindest was die Perlentechnik angeht (zur kompletten Afrika-Kollektion geht es hier). Die Technik stammt aus Diane Fitzgeralds Buch “Zulu Inspired Beadwork”, das ich schon öfter erwähnt habe und das ich sehr schätze, vor allem wegen der ungewöhnlichen Techniken und den wunderbaren Ausführungen über das südliche Afrika. Eigentlich sollte dieses Armband einen Halskette werden, aber gerade bei dieser Technik ist es besonders schwierig, die Bögen und Dreiecke so anzupassen, daß sie schön am Hals anliegen. Und so wurde ein Armband daraus. Trotz der Form sitzt es sehr gut am Arm und schlägt nicht etwa um oder rutscht auf die Unterseite des Arms. Für das Armband macht man zuerst eine Square-Stitch-Basis, auf die man dann Reihe für Reihe das restliche Design aufbaut. Die Perlen sind 11/0-Rocailles und geschlossen wird das Armband mit einem Knopf.

Recently I was in Africa again, at least what concerns the beading technique (see my complete African collection here). The technique is from Diane Fitzgerald’s book “Zulu Inspired Beadwork”, that I mentioned earlier in my blog and that I appreciate very much, especially for the unusual beading techniques and the wonderful explanations about Southern Africa. Actually this bracelet should become a necklace, but especially this technique makes it very difficult to adjust the triangles and swags in a way, so they drape nicely around the neck. And so I made a bracelet instead. In spite of the shape it doesn’t turn over or slips to the bottom side of the wrist. For the bracelet I made a square stitch base first, to which I added the design row after row. I used size 11 seedbeads and finished the bracelet with a button-and-loop-closure.

Grüner Türkis/Green Turquoise

Dieses Jahr möchte ich versuchen, ein wenig mehr mit Sterlingsilber zu arbeiten und einige Schmuckstücke mit Sterlingsilber und Halbedelsteinen herzustellen. Allerdings bin ich nicht ganz sicher, ob sich Käufer für diese Schmuckstücke finden, deshalb ist das erste Werk auch nur für mich (hab schon Komplimente für die Kette bekommen! ). Ich habe mir diese Ohrringe mit Türkisnuggets und Silberperlen beim Hudson’s Bay Indian Trading Post gekauft. Ein passendes T-Shirt hatte ich dafür, aber keine Kette. Bis mir bei Ebay ein wunderschöner Türkis-Strang im passenden Farbton über den Weg lief. Schnell noch ein paar Spacer aus Sterlingsilber dazubestellt, zu Hause zur Kette zusammengestellt et voilà: ein Schmuckset, das wirklich perfekt zusammenpaßt. Und ein guter Start mit Halbedelsteinen und Silber!

This year I’d like to try a few jewelry pieces with sterling silver and semiprecious stones. But I’m not really sure if these pieces sell and so the first piece is only for me (already got some compliments for the necklace! ). I bought the shown earrings  from the Hudson’s Bay Indian Trading Post. I had a matching t-shirt, but no necklace. Until I found a strand of green turquoise on Ebay. I ordered some sterling silver spacers with the turquoise strand, put it all together at home et voilà: a jewelry set, that fits together perfectly. And a good start with semiprecious stones and silver!

Allen meinen Lesern wünsche ich ein frohes neues Jahr mit viel Freude, Gesundheit und schönen Erlebnissen!

Als Pearl, die kanadische Autorin von The Beading Gem’s Journal mich per Mail ansprach, ob Sie meine Perlen-Engel für einen Weihnachtsgruß veröffentlichen darf, war ich sehr überrascht, aber gleichzeitig auch erfreut, daß sich andere für meine Arbeiten interessieren. Wir haben einige Mails mit Fotos und Informationen ausgetauscht und plötzlich waren da meine Engel als Weihnachtsgruß für alle! Auch 2008 haben wieder einige Engel meine Werkstatt als Geschenke verlassen und noch immer ist kein einziger von ihnen an meinem Christbaum gelandet (wie ich das ursprünglich geplant hatte).

Pearls Seite ist eine Fundgrube für alle, die sich für Schmuck und seine Geschichte interessieren und die sich gerne anschauen, was andere Schmuckdesigner so machen. Ich lese ihren Blog so oft ich kann und ich muß zugeben, daß ich mich riesig gefreut habe, eine meiner Arbeiten dort zu sehen. Danke Pearl!

First of all I’d like to wish all my readers a Happy New Year!

I was very surprised, when Pearl, the Canadian author of The Beading Gem’s Journal, asked me, if she can use my beaded angels for a christmas post. But at the same time I was very delighted, that other beaders are interested in my work. We exchanged some emails with photos and information and suddenly there were my angels as Christmas greetings to all! And again, in 2008, many angels left my studio as gifts, but not a single one landed on my Christmas tree (as I originally planned it).

Pearl’s blog is a treasure trove for all people, who are interested in jewelry and its history and who love to look at the work that other jewelry designers do. I read her blog as often as I can and I have to admit, that I am very happy to see one of my pieces  on her site. Thanks Pearl!
